RYAN FERGUSON – My Bowls Profile
I was first asked by Paul Bryan if I would be interested in joining bowls for juniors, and to see if I liked it. George Town Bowls Club was giving a grant to assist young players just like me; must say a great opportunity to give it a go.
So around about the 18th September 2019 I decided to try it out. Paul picked me up once a week to do some practice to see if I liked it and also taught me the rules as we went.
I really enjoyed playing from the start and picked up the rules pretty good. I kept training with Paul then I got asked to play in the Saturday social game which I really enjoyed.
I built up my confidence when playing with the adults. After a little while I was asked to play Pennant but I was told I would have to be committed every Saturday, and I said I would be, and my role was to play Lead.
Then Paul suggested I try out for Bowls North under 18’s which I really enjoyed playing. Then I played in the North Bowls Statewide Challenge at Longford and I was helped a lot by Vicki. Next up I played Bowls North under 18’s championship’s in Launceston and was helped by Dennis, Vicki & Rae. I also met a lot of junior players my age and younger who helped me as well.
After that I felt I really had built my confidence.
Early this year I found more confident training by myself; also Rae Simpson helped me out a lot with practise at Kings Meadows.
I feel I have gained a lot of skills and enjoyed playing Pennant in Division 5 with Paul as my skip.
I really appreciate George Town Bowls Club for helping and supporting me so far and encouraging me to never give up.
I have really enjoyed my time playing and cannot wait to be able to play again.
